Restoration of Dynamic Floodplain Topography and Riparian Vegetation Establishment through Engineered Levee Breaching
نویسندگان
چکیده
Engineered levee breaches on the lower Cosumnes River, Central California, create hydrologic and geomorphic conditions necessary to construct dynamic sand splay complexes on the floodplain. Sand splay complexes are composed of a network of main and secondary distributary channels that transport sediment during floods. The main channel is bounded by lateral levees that flank the breach opening. The levees are separated into depositional lobes by incision of secondary distributary channels. The dynamic topography governs distribution of dense, fast-growing cottonwood (Populus fremontii) and willow (Salix spp.) stands. In turn, establishment and growth of these plants influences erosional resistance and roughness, promoting local sedimentation and scour. Cottonwood and willow establishment is associated with late spring flooding and the occurrence of abundant bare ground.

River Res Applic. 2017;1–13. Abstract The transport of water and sediment from rivers to adjacent floodplains helps generate complex floodplain, wetland, and riparian ecosystems. However, riverside levees restrict lateral connectivity of water and sediment during flood pulses, making the re‐introduction of floodplain hydrogeomorphic processes through intentional levee breaching and removal an e...

Restoration of sustainable geomorphic processes that create floodplain topography through development of sand-splay complexes at intentional breaches is one method to promote variability in physical structure needed for habitat restoration. The topography of splay complexes provides a range of floodplain elevations that creates local variability in (i) inundation duration and frequency and dept...
متن کاملThe Influence of Restored Flooding on Floodplain Plant Distributions By WENDY BRYAN TROWBRIDGE
Recent work in riparian restoration has focused on the importance of restoration of physical processes. The assumption behind this is that if rivers are reconnected to their natural floodplain desired vegetation will quickly colonize. This dissertation consists of three studies conducted to test this assumption. The study site is series of former agricultural fields that were separated from the...
متن کاملQuantifying the Effect of Riparian Forest versus Agricultural Vegetation on River Meander Migration Rates, Central Sacramento River, California, Usa
Riparian forest vegetation is widely believed to protect riverbanks from erosion, but few studies have quantified the effect of riparian vegetation removal on rates of river channel migration. Measured historical changes in a river channel centreline, combined with mapped changes in floodplain vegetation, provide an opportunity to test how riparian vegetation cover affects the erodibility of ri...

Societal constraints often limit full process restoration in large river systems, making local rehabilitation activities valuable for regeneration of riparian vegetation. A target of much mitigation and restoration is the federally threatened Valley elderberry longhorn beetle and its sole host plant, blue elderberry, in upper riparian floodplain environments. However, blue elderberry ecology is...
